In January 2008, Kyle Baxter approached me about starting a high quality technology site. He and I were both sick of the fact that 99% of the blogs out spent all their time writing one paragraph blurbs with a link to another one paragraph blurb on another blog. Sure, we reasoned, there’s a place for that. But we also wanted quality writing, and that was just really hard to find. Therefore, I immediately agreed, and the two of us launched the site as 50-50 partners under the working name of Tech It Out!. After a few months of working on names and schedules, we re-launched under the name Dawning Valley with several of our friends from various sites (including Free Software Magazine and Newsvine.com). Later, I ended up taking another 20% from Kyle based on time commitment.
Here’s our mission statement:
The web is awash with tech-related blogging, but most of it is junk. Part of the problem is the weblog model itself. Because it is so easy to write a quick blurb or article without any real thought, research and analysis, we tend to get a lot of worthless stuff.
We want to make the diamonds rise to the top, by encouraging our contributors to submit their best technology articles to Dawning Valley. That’s all we accept — top quality technology content.
Dawning Valley exists to feature great content. We may not have an article every day, but when we do publish, you can be sure that we are satisfied with it.
